Why our kits do not need a freezer

Most reagents are formulated for a lab at the end of an unbroken cold chain. We dry ours into a glass instead, so heat stops being a risk we manage and becomes something we designed around.

The process

Four steps from enzyme to sealed dose

Every product uses the same process, which is why a new kit gets the room-temperature shelf life without starting over.

Pick an enzyme that survives drying

We screen thermostable polymerase variants for how much activity they keep after being dried out. Most of the work is choosing the right starting enzyme, not rescuing a bad one later.

Set it in a glass

A trehalose–mannitol scaffold vitrifies around the enzyme. In a glass, molecules cannot move, and an enzyme that cannot move cannot unfold.

Freeze-dry it

Controlled primary and secondary drying pull residual moisture below 2%. That is the line above which the glass stops behaving like a glass in tropical heat.

Seal it under nitrogen

Foil-sealed single doses that need nothing but water to come back. No freezer, no gel pack, no courier chain to break.

Measured against a 4 °C control lot

We hold each formulation under real-time and accelerated conditions, then run it against a refrigerated control. What matters is not whether the enzyme is still there. It is whether the reaction still gives you the band.

Stability is measured under tropical conditions rather than extrapolated from a temperate model, because that is where these kits have to survive.

How we make it

Formulation first, volume second

The chemistry is done and the drying cycles are validated. Production capacity is what we are building now, which is why we would rather put kits in a few labs and be corrected than scale something nobody has stress-tested.

The cycle

Freeze, dry, seal

The reagent is frozen solid, then the ice is pulled off as vapour under vacuum rather than melted. What is left is a dry cake with the enzyme suspended in it, sealed before it can pick up moisture again.

Add water at the bench and the whole thing comes back in seconds.
